Gopi Lullaby
Krishna has many name, and this song He is called Govinda, or He who is very pleasing to the cows, divine cowherd maidens and all those living in the land of Braja. The name of Damodara means that the all powerful Supreme Lord is only able to be bound and controlled by the pure love of His mother and by the pure love of Shrimati Radhika in particular. In essence, Madhava means “He hwo is always controlled by Radhika”. So by singing the names Govinda, Madhava and Damodara, we are praying to krishna for his mercy.
govinda damodara madhaveti
govinda damodara madhaveti
hey krishna! hey yadava! hey sakheti!
govinda damodara madhaveti
mata yashoda hari ko jagave, jago utho mohana naina kholo
dvare khare gvala bula rahe hae, govinda damodara madhaveti
On awakening Shri Hari (Krishna), Mother Yashoda says, “Awaken and rise Mohana! (all enchanting one). Open your eyes! Your friends are waiting for You at the door! Govinda! Damodara! Madhava!”
sa nirajakshim valokya radham
ruroda govinda-viyoga-khinnam
sakhi praphullotpala-locanabhyam
govinda damodara madhaveti
Seeing Shrimati Radharani crying froms the pangs of separation from Govinda, the blooming lotus eyes of Radha’s girlfriend also filled with tears, and she cried, “Govinda, Damodara, Madhava!”.
